Teaching
With 25 years' of wide-ranging teaching experience, I am a versatile and open-minded teacher adept in diverse methods of exploring the craft and beauty of music.
About me
I studied Music at King's College, Cambridge (MA Cantab), trained as secondary school teacher (PGCE), and hold an accredited piano teaching diploma (DipABRSM) I have taught one-to-one, in secondary school classrooms, at university, and as an adult education lecturer for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. I have also taught subjects other than music (from foreign languages to woodwork), and this range of experiences has given me a wider perspective on education and learning, as well as a comprehensive "utility belt" of teaching methods. As a result, my students benefit from a flexible, rounded and compassionate approach.
Piano
As a classically trained pianist. I have a particular interest in technical excellence from the off: posture, hand position, optimised fingerings and a controlled, even tone are essential, whether you're a complete beginner wanting to avoid the sowing of bad habits, or a seasoned post-Grade 8 pianist looking to nuance their expressivity and increase their raw power at the instrument.
Composition and music theory
As an active composer educated to PhD level, I can offer insights, connections and techniques regarding all types of music, from classical to jazz, rock and folk. I do believe that music theory makes most sense when applied regularly in a creative way, be it through writing down music or through improvisation. My passion is Western harmonic practice over the last 400 years, and this so happens to be the cornerstone of music theory as it is currently examined, so if you happen to need to pass a graded theory exam, I hope I can make a potential chore a delight.

I've successfully prepared students for:
